The Knott Scholarship Funds provide financial support for full and partial scholarships for Notre Dame of Maryland University, Loyola University Maryland, and Mount Saint Mary’s University. It was the wish of Henry and Marion Knott that academically talented Catholic students use their gifts and talents to become leaders in their school, community, and the Catholic Church.
There are two types of undergraduate scholarships offered:
- Marion Burk Knott Scholarships are awarded for full tuition for four years.
- Students must take the SAT or ACT to qualify for consideration.
Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Scholarship awards range from $10,000 per year to full tuition. Students do not need to take the SAT or ACT to qualify for consideration.
Additional eligibility requirements for EITHER Scholarship:
- Student must be Catholic, as evidenced by the submission of a baptismal certificate and a letter from the current parish.
- Students must reside in and be a registered parishioner inside the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
- Students must also meet specific academic criteria defined by the receiving university.
If awarded, Knott Scholars must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher each semester, complete an annual Scholar Profile, and participate in events sponsored by the Knott Scholarship Funds or the recipient university.

Q: What are Knott Scholarships?
Knott Scholarships are awarded to academically high achieving Catholic students to attend Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Since their inception in 1982, it has been the dream of Henry and Marion Knott to allow students to be able to take advantage of the benefits of a Catholic education so that they would become leaders in their schools, communities, and the Catholic Church.
Q: My child will be receiving/has applied for scholarship support from their chosen university – if we are successful how much does this scholarship cover?
Knott Scholarships are for up to four years and cover tuition. No books, fees, etc. are covered by a Knott Scholarship. Knott Scholarships cover either a minimum of 60% of tuition (Marion I and Henry J Knott Scholarships) or full tuition (Marion Burk Knott Scholarships) If awarded, your chosen university will replace institutional aid with the funds supplied by the Knott Scholarship Office. We pay the school directly on behalf of your family.
Q: What is expected of a Knott Scholar?
Knott Scholars are expected to maintain academic excellence as outlined by their specific scholarships.
Knott Scholars are expected to make Knott Scholarship Funds’ events a priority and participate in at least one Knott Scholarship Funds community project or social event each year.
They are expected to provide information on their activities annually through a Scholar Profile, which is distributed by the Knott Scholarship Funds office.
Knott Scholars are expected to maintain contact with the Knott Scholarship Funds office once they have graduated and are designated as Knott Scholar Alumni.
Knott Scholars are expected to be active participants in their university, church, and neighborhood communities.
Q: Are these scholarships given through the Knott Foundation?
No, they are not. The Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Foundation is a separate organization that provides funding to organizations in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Scholaships are awarded from the Knott Scholarship Funds. In any correspondence regarding a scholarship, inquiries should be made to the Knott Scholarship Funds.
Applying for a Scholarship (Collegiate)
Q: How do I apply for a Collegiate Knott Scholarship?
To begin the process for consideration of a Knott Scholarship, go to the “Scholarship” section of our website and locate the type of scholarship (Elementary, Secondary, or College) that applies to your family. After determining that initial criteria are met, our website will link you directly to the three Catholic Universities we support, and you can apply for consideration there. We provide funding and criteria to the universities; they select the candidates for the KSF to support.
Q: I received a Knott Scholarship in Secondary School, does that Guarantee a Scholarship at the University Level?
No, it does not. Applications are reviewed against the pool of incoming students. Listing your Knott Scholarship should be done as a part of your academic achievements for any college scholarship.
Q: I was not a Knott Scholar in Elementary or Secondary School. Is it possible for me to be awarded a Knott Scholarship for college?
Yes. Your application will be reviewed on its own merits. Not having a Knott Scholarship previously does not preclude you from a collegiate award.
Q: I have a Knott Scholarship, and I want to transfer the Scholarship to another university. Is that possible?
No, it is not. Our funding is to the specific universities. Scholarships are non-transferrable.
Q: What happens if I am awarded a collegiate Knott Scholarship?
You will register with us as a Knott Scholar and then will have access to all our programming, service, and networking opportunities. We will monitor your grades and make you aware of the conditions necessary to maintain your scholarship.
Q: Are scholarships available for graduate school?
No, they are not. For either a full or partial scholarship, the award is for a maximum of 8 undergraduate semesters.
Q: What leadership opportunities are available for Knott Scholars?
Knott Scholars are encouraged to seek out leadership opportunities in their schools, parishes, and communities. As an active member of our community, our Scholars are offered numerous and valuable opportunities to lead at our events, in our communications and with each other. Our team will communicate these opportunities to our Scholars, both past and present, on a consistent and timely basis.
